In partnership with Human-Animal Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO), we support care communities which highlight the positive impact that companion animals have with elderly and people suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
The Netherlands is one of the world’s leading innovators in its approach to the care for the elderly and people suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
We visited two care communities, residential and day care facilites which are situated in an environment where the service users are surrounded by nature and a variety of different animals but these projects go a step further and allow their community to bring their companion animals with them.
Ceva partners with the International Association of Human-Animal Interaction Organizations (IAHAIO) wich is globally respected for promoting science-based research and education particularly in the field of the human-animal bond.
IAHAIO’s President, Marie-Jose Enders-Slegers, based in the Netherlands, has developed links with these programmes and is a keen supporter of policies that encourage companion animals to play a role in care communities.
She is participating in work to develop a toolkit for caregivers working with people in long-term home facilites and their companion animals as well as developing an e-learning course for those caregivers, on how to care for the animals themselves and maintain pet ownership as long as possible.
