Ehpanimal: An innovative and remarkable initiative for retirement home residents’ pets in Libourne, France
In December 2024, La Belle-Isle nursing home (Libourne, France) inaugurated a one-of-a-kind project in France: Ehpanimal, a facility designed to allow residents to live alongside their cherished pets. This project, result of the collaboration between Libourne Hospital Center, Ceva Animal Health and Cheops Technology, addresses the growing need to preserve the emotional bond among elderly residents and their hairy companions, crucial for their overall well-being.
At Ceva, we are deeply committed to understanding and promoting the human-animal bond. Projects like Ehpanimal align with our belief that this connection is not only emotional but also supported by robust scientific evidence. This initiative is yet another example of how Ceva supports programs around the world that demonstrate the benefits of the human-animal relationship.
The power of pets: emotional and physical benefits for elderly people
The presence of companion animals has proven benefits on the emotional and physical health of elderly individuals. Scientific studies have shown that interactions with pets release positive hormones, such as dopamine and oxytocin, which help improve mood, reduce stress, and alleviate depressive symptoms. For residents of retirement homes, where social isolation is often a significant challenge, the companionship of animals fosters meaningful connections—with their pets, fellow residents, and care staff—creating a warmer, more welcoming atmosphere.
On the physical plan, benefits are just as striking. Pets encourage daily routine, such as feeding schedule or dogs’ walks, which are essential for maintaining autonomy. Physical activities prompted by animal care improve mobility, heart health and overall well-being while lowering blood pressure and heart rate. Scientists have found that endorphins secreted through contact with animals are also powerful painkillers. It has been proved that interacting with animals stimulates memory, attention and cognitive abilities, promoting greater mental alertness.
Ehpanimal: a shared commitment to the Human-Animal Bond
Ehpanimal was made possible thanks to the dedication of Ceva and Cheops Technology, who both funded this project. Purina also provided financial support for its implementation. This initiative relies on a network of committed partners, such as the Hospital Center of Libourne, the TERPTA association, Hobo (architectural company), and Falco (wood construction), who have all made a major input into the creation of this unique venue.
A global commitment backed by science
Ehpanimal is not an isolated initiative. It is part of Ceva’s broader mission to support scientific research and programs that prove the importance of the human-animal bond worldwide. From research conducted in the Netherlands, France, and the UK to initiatives aimed at redefining care home designs, Ceva is committed to integrating scientific evidence into practical solutions.
The Ehpanimal project is a natural extension of this work, illustrating how animals can significantly enhance the quality of life for elderly individuals by providing comfort, joy, and a renewed sense of connection.
Ceva will continue to champion initiatives like Ehpanimal, promoting innovative solutions that improve both human and animal well-being. Together, we aim to build a world where the human-animal bond is understood, valued, and nurtured.
